Suzuki SV650 (2016) Επανακυκλοφορεί!

Το 2009 ήταν η τελευταία χρονιά που κυκλοφόρησαν μοντέλα μοτοσυκλετών που είχαν το κλασικό στρογγυλό φανάρι. Έκτοτε τα μοντέρνα φανάρια τύπου Transformers, έγιναν Must και οριοθετήθηκαν ως στάνταρ την σημερινής εποχής. Όμως οι εταιρίες κατασκευής μοτοσυκλετών το παράκαναν, με αρκετά αντιαισθητικά φανάρια, δήθεν μοντέρνα, και οι λάτρεις των μοτοσυκλετών είχαν επιθυμήσει να ξανατοποθετηθούν στρογγυλά φανάρια, τα οποία είναι λιτά και ταιριάζουν με αρκετούς τύπους μοτοσυκλετών. Η Suzuki εξαιτίας της μη καλής πορείας που είχε το Gladius SFV650, το οποίο το 2009 αντικατέστησε το SV650/A και S, επαναφέρει στην αγορά το SV, βασισμένο αυτή τη φορά στο Gladius! Πρόκειται ουσιαστικά για ένα Gladius, με στρογγυλό φανάρι και διαφορετικό σχεδιασμό, αλλά καμία άλλη ουσιαστική αλλαγή, αρκεί για να γεμίσει η αγορά ξανά με μοτοσυκλέτες που έχουν κάτι ρετρό επάνω τους!

Σαν σήμερα πριν 25 χρόνια κυκλοφόρησε το SNES στην Ιαπωνία με την ονομασία Super Famicom.

Το Super Nintendo όπως το γνωρίσαμε στην αμερικάνικη και ευρωπαϊκή ονομασία του, κυκλοφόρησε σαν σήμερα πριν απο 25 χρόνια στην αφορά της Ιαπωνίας. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως πούλησε σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο περισσότερο από το Sega Mega Drive το οποίο διατήρησε την πρωτιά για ένα διάστημα σε Αμερική κι Ευρώπη, πριν κυκλοφορήσει η Nintendo τοDonkey Kong Country.

The Hometown of Popeye!!!

David Torrence Debbie Brooks owns Spinach Can Collectibles and the Popeye Museum in the hometown of cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar.
Before unveiling the newest granite statue on the Popeye and Friends Character Trail last year in Chester, Ill. (pop. 5,185), resident Cathy Rinne asked the crowd: “Who knows the first words that Popeye spoke?”

Dozens of voices bellowed in unison, “Ja think I’m a cowboy?”

Such Popeye trivia might confound nonresidents, but folks in Chester revel in the roots of the one-eyed, spinach-gulping sailor whose history is intertwined with the town’s. Popeye’s creator, Elzie Crisler Segar, was born in Chester in 1894 and modeled his comic strip characters after townspeople.

Pride in the classic comic strip is evident throughout town in murals and statues of Popeye, his sweetheart Olive Oyl and her brother Castor Oyl, adopted baby Swee’ Pea, villain Bluto and hamburger-loving mooch Wimpy. The local newspaper, Randolph County Herald Tribune, publishes “Popeye 101,” a weekly trivia column, and Chester firefighters and police officers sport Popeye’s image on their vehicles and uniform patches.

“Daily we get requests from police departments wanting our patch,” says Deputy Chief Bobby Helmers, 41, while directing traffic during the 30th annual Popeye Picnic last September.

Nearby, Rough House Pizza serves spinach pizza, and Popeye fans flock to Spinach Can Collectibles, a museum and gift shop housed in the 1875 Chester Opera House building where Segar operated a silent movie projector at age 12.

“This is the very building where the comic strip began,” says Debbie Brooks, 53. She and her husband, Mike, 53, founded the Official Popeye Fan Club in 1989. When the opera house was for sale in 1994, they couldn’t resist owning a piece of cartoon history.

“Segar was a projectionist upstairs and while he’d rewind the films, he’d draw pictures of locals and project them onto glass slides and the screen,” Mike says.

Segar’s boss, Bill Schuchert, recognized the young artist’s talent and paid for his mail-order cartooning lessons. Segar eventually landed a job with King Features in New York, where he created the Thimble Theatre comic strip starring the Oyl family in 1919.

“Uncle Bill loved hamburgers,” says Ernie Schuchert, 82, of Chester, about his great-uncle. “The story is that he’d send Segar to Weibusch Saloon next door to get hamburgers.”

When Segar drew Wimpy, a character renowned for offering to pay Tuesday for a hamburger today, he looked like Schuchert. Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, a local one-eyed, pipe-smoking tough guy, inspired the Popeye character, and lanky storekeeper Dora Paskel, who wore her hair in a tight bun and clunky shoes, sparked the idea for Olive Oyl.

Though Popeye became the central character in the comic strip, Segar didn’t create him until 1929 when Castor Oyl needed someone to pilot a boat to Dice Island for his get-rich-quick scheme. On the dock, he spied Popeye and asked, “Hey, are you a sailor?” and Popeye retorted, “Ja think I’m a cowboy?”

The independent sailor with his peculiar speech and phrases—such as “I yam what I yam”—was so adored by readers that he soon replaced Harold Ham Gravy as Olive Oyl’s boyfriend and became the main character in the comics and later television cartoons.

“I like the little guy standing up for himself, protecting himself and what he holds dear to him,” says fan club member Ryan Maxwell, 23, of Dyer, Ind. (pop. 13,895), in explaining Popeye’s appeal.

The sailor is recognized worldwide, says cartoonist Hy Eisman, 83, of Glen Rock, N.J., who has drawn the comic strip since 1994. He recalls an incident inside the Sistine Chapel where an Italian tour guide noticed a Popeye pin worn by his wife, Florenz. When Florenz said that he was the Popeye cartoonist, the guide whipped out a piece of paper.

“Everybody else was looking up at the ceiling, and she said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to draw Popeye for my husband,’” Eisman recalls. “I upstaged Michelangelo.”

But nowhere is Popeye more popular than in Chester where creator Elzie Segar’s great-niece Ruth Ann Segar Welge, 66, understands the timeless appeal of the sailor man and his fellow comic strip characters.

“Popeye is liked because he’s the common man fighting for everything he gets,” Welge says. “He’s a scrapper, and all those characters were here in Chester.

Πρόκειται για μια μεταφορά που δεν θα αφήσει ασυγκίνητους τους λάτρεις του θρυλικού Atari, επειδή έχει στοιχεία που έλειπαν από πολλά παιχνίδια που κυκλοφόρησαν, στην εποχή που η κονσόλα μεσουρανούσε.

Sony is finally killing Betamax

Of all Sony's failed proprietary formats, Betamax has to be the most iconic — the videotape format's eventual vanquishment by VHS set the stage for countless media wars down the subsequent decades. It is probably news to you, then, that Beta cassettes are still a thing you can buy. This will not be very useful news for long, however, because Sony just announced it'll stop selling them from March of next year.

The company is also taking its tiny MicroMV camcorder cassettes off the market at the same time. To be clear, Sony hasn't been trying to make a go of Betamax and MicroMV all these years; it stopped producing the last recorders back in 2002. The company's Japanese store already lists Beta tapes as being out of production, too, although you can still find new cassettes on Amazon Japan easily.

The last Betamax products in production were the EL-500B, 2L-500MHGB, 2L-750MHGB cassettes and L-25CLP cleaning tape, and MicroMV is going out with the MGR60 tape and MGRCLD cleaning tape. For those still using any of these products in 2015, we here at The Verge salute you and offer our sincerest commiserations.

Πέθανε ο αγαπημένος ηθοποιός Κώστας Τσάκωνας. Ο ηθοποιός είχε χτυπηθεί πριν πέντε χρόνια από εγκεφαλικό, το οποίο του προκάλεσε μεγάλη αστάθεια, ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια έδινε μάχη με τον καρκίνο. Πριν λίγο καιρό υποβλήθηκε και σε χειρουργική επέμβαση στην ουροδόχο κύστη και είχε νοσηλευτεί σε νοσοκομείο στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.

Η Καίτη Φίνου στην προσωπική σελίδα της στο Facebook έγραψε. «Και ο θάνατός σου σαν τα ανέκδοτα που έλεγες μαθεύτηκε.-Πέθανε,δεν πέθανε πάλι ψέματα είναι….Όμως αυτή την φορά στο τέλος δεν μπορέσαμε να γελάσουμε. Γιατί στ’αλήθεια είχες φύγει. Καλό σου ταξίδι Κώστα».

Γεννήθηκε στις 12 Οκτωβρίου 1943 στην Αθήνα. Φοίτησε στη «Δραματική Σχολή του Λαϊκού Πειραματικού Θεάτρου» του Λεωνίδα Τριβιζά και στη δραματική σχολή «Βεάκη». Η πρώτη του εμφάνιση στον κινηματογράφο έγινε με εντελώς τυχαίο τρόπο σε μια ταινία μικρού μήκους του Κώστα Ζυρίνη. Στην συνέχεια έπαιξε σε πολλούς πρωταγωνιστικούς ρόλους στον κινηματογράφο, το θέατρο αλλά και στην τηλεόραση.

The headlight too is a compromise forced on the designers as a way of hiding the ignition and wiring and yet retaining the single headlamp, key to its heritage look. Personally I like the headlight, it's a bold statement and sets the XSR apart from its rivals.

If you're not entirely satisfied with the standard bike then the XSR comes with a parts and accessories catalogue already containing over 40 custom options. Yamaha even has an app to design your own bike in a 3D workshop. Expect Yamaha to be supporting and promoting some crazy yard built XSR's over the next year - you won't see a standard XSR at a major bike show in the next year without some custom chop parked beside it.

I think crucially, and this point will certainly be missed, the XSR isn't just another retro rehash. It isn't trying to mimic a predecessor in the way Triumph's Bonneville does, it is something new. It takes inspiration from retro bikes but the engine, frame and design philosophy are completely modern. For example, the engine as a stressed member of the frame helps make the XSR 40kg lighter than the Bonneville. Guess which is more fun to ride?

For me, there's something disingenuous about simply ripping off a historic model, it's fake and fancy dress. I like the way the XSR looks, particularly in the matte silver option. Your only other colour choice is British racing green, which just felt a bit too predictable and clumsily retro - why not yellow Speedblocks? (SPOILER ALERT) I'll be waiting until the inevitable Kenny Roberts promoted flat-tracker variant before I get my wish.

Yamaha promises a tank range of just over 190 miles but I rode for 125 miles and the 14 litre tank was almost dry. It's true, the ride crossed a couple of mountains but the heavy rain certainly kept my throttle steady and I'd have expected a slightly better economy than 40.5mpg. 

So why splash out an extra £500 on an XSR instead of an MT07? Other than a more comfortable riding position and a taller seat height you'd have a job justifying your purchase. But the answer is simple really, because you think it looks cooler... and it probably does.

More crucially, why would you spend an extra £1,000 on a base model Scrambler (and another £100 on top of that if you want it in yellow... which of course you do)? I've ridden both bikes recently and the smart money is on the XSR. It has Yamaha's reputation for reliability behind it, it handles, stops and goes as well, if not better, than the Scrambler. It's more comfortable. There is a lot of weight tipping the balance of judgment towards the XSR. So it's a no-brainer? Not quite.

Ducati has done an incredible job marketing the Scrambler. It hasn't just sold us a bike, it's sold a lifestyle and an image. Of course, the internet loves to laugh at the hipster Land of Joy and Ducati loves to laugh at the internet... because Ducati is laughing all the way to the bank, the last laugh.

Yamaha is trying to sprinkle this hipster magic fairy dust on the XSR, even launching a lifestyle brand called Faster Sons to complement its retro bike scene. Will it work? Well that remains to be seen but Yamaha's biggest problem is Ducati not only got there first but it did its marketing flawlessly. It's going to take more than a few washed out, lo-fi photoshoots of beautiful models who have clearly never replaced a spark plug to beat Ducati at its own game.

But... if you're capable of putting 'cool' aside (because this is a much harder to quantify substance than cash) then choose the XSR700. With the money you save you can spend it on actually living the carefree lifestyle the Land of Joy so espouses.
